I’ve been wondering what the cost of upgrading to a new iPhone would be. I have an iPhone 2G that I purchased in March 2008. Aside the cost of a new phone, here’s what my upgrade cost would be:
| Current costs: | Upgrade costs: | |
|---|---|---|
| Minutes: | $39.99 | $39.99 |
| Data: | $30.00 | $30.00 |
| 1500 Texts: | (included in data plan) | $15.00 |
| Base Total: | $69.99 | $84.99 |
My current plan includes 450 anytime minutes and a gazillion night/weekend minutes for $39.99. This price will stay with an upgrade.
I also pay $30.00 for the data plan (to connect to the internet) that includes 1500 text messages. It looks like with the iPhone 3G and 3GS, the data plan is separated from the text messaging plans…which becomes the factor that increases total costs. With the upgrade, the data plan is $30.00 and 1500 text messages are $15.00.
In total, this would raise my base cost by $15, which in turn would increase the taxes, government surcharges, and other fees. My entire cost — phone purchase aside — would be about $18-19 higher per month.
(Thanks *very* much to Peter Berg for sharing his upgrade expense sheet with me).
