Hey Brynn,
Met Sean Ammirati today during an agile prod development lecture, and he recommended I look you up given my interest in user-centered design, prod development, and business. I love that you tackled this problem and hope Starbucks makes it happen. I want all disposable food containers to be recyclable...it is amazing how many still aren't! I am glad to learn Google values design. By chance do you know if their is a Google business design group, or if the UX team would value the perspective of an MBA specializing in go-to-market strategies and technology commercialization?

Best,
Jason Doran

@Nils: I'm new to bodystorming too but I'm finding that it can be a useful way to break "outside of the box" when you're brainstorming. I've even used it recently to play-act a conversation I was going to have with someone later! Sounds silly, but it gave me a clear idea of what to say (and not to say).

Barcodes are certainly a good idea that we're considering. We're open to any technological solution that best fits the bill — but really we're looking for some way to intelligently remember (and update) you drink preferences, debit card, and loyalty points card. We're looking to creating incentivized conveniences.

@Rob, @Laker: It's important to note that we're not trying to just make a new cup or technology. (So it's not as easy as saying replace "betacup" with "barcode.") We're hoping to enact a shift in practices for the good of the environment — perhaps beginning with a betacup, but later percolating over into other areas of environmental concern.

There are already some recyclable paper cups. But as with "cheap" gas, people are growing accustomed to practices that are bad for the environment long term, and which will be harder to break out of before long. It's worth a reminder that the betacup is trying to solve a waste problem, not necessarily a recycling problem.

So I have to buy a betacup, carry it around with me everywhere, and wash it myself? Why not just make a paper cup that *is* recyclable.

You can reduce "betacup" to a barcoded sticker for your mug.

Drinks already shorthanded "3xLD W/C W/W", which can be in big font on sticker.

Labels easily changed/replaced/compatible.
Label makers are inexpensive and available.

Great story! I want to learn more about some of the techniques you used, in particular bodystorming - I'll check out Tibetan Tailor!

But I had a quick thought - the cup could just be barcoded or RFID'd, and they could have a reader at the counter. This way the cup doesn't need electronics - which might, for example, get fried if it were put in the dishwasher. (Actually, that's my other concern - how would it be washed between uses? If this depends on the user, rather than the vendor, it could be a problem.)

Looking forward to reading more of your posts.

Do you do work in this area? How did you find this blog post?

We're looking to turn this project into a bigger enterprise — like actually produce a "betacup." Stay tuned here for more information, but please also provide any type of feedback!

Thanks again :)
